The Irish are the fittest in the world... according to Fitbit

The Irish may be famous for their Guinness-guzzling but in actual fact its Fitbit users are the fittest in the world.

Using aggregated and anonymous data from more than 20 million Fitbit users across the globe, and Fitbit users in Ireland represented the fittest country in the world.

Researchers ranked average rates for duration of sleep, daily steps, daily active minutes, resting heart rate and ‘Reminders to Move’ goals met to determine the fittest countries in the world.

Irish Fitbit users performed well across all metrics but have some stepping up to do with a daily average step count of 8,517 steps. Fitbit users in Spain represented the country with the highest number of steps per day, with an average of 9,023 daily steps.

Fitbit starts everyone off with a 10,000-step goal, as it adds up to about five miles each day for most people, which equates to about 30 minutes of daily exercise.  

On average, Irish Fitbit users are clocking up 24 active minutes daily, just 3.9 minutes behind leaders Spain and 4 minutes ahead of Singapore who average just 20 active minutes daily.

Irish users sleep well, getting an average duration of 7 hours, 11 minutes and 7 seconds, ranking fourth on the list of highest quality of sleep. The UK topped the list with an average of 7 hours, 14 minutes and 44 seconds per night, while Hungarians sleep the least at just 6 hours, 52 minutes and 37 seconds per night.
