A MAN who accidentally smashed the windscreen of a police car with a metal-tipped bolt fired from a crossbow while attempting to kill pigeons in north Belfast, will not face any further action.

The police vehicle, which was parked in the rear yard of Tennent Street PSNI station, had its back windscreen shattered last Wednesday evening by the bolt, which police said travelled up to 50 metres after being fired from the Cambrai Street area.

After an initial appeal about the incident, a man came forward voluntarily to police and officers said they were no longer treating the damage as malicious.

It is understood that the man holds a legal crossbow licence and told police he was trying to shoot pigeons when the bolt accidentally struck the vehicle, and has since paid for the damage caused to the vehicle.

Police said the man had apologised for the incident and has been given advice about the future use of his crossbow.
