Belfast boxer Paddy Barnes is encouraging people to `wake up' to the critical issue of self-harm and suicide, which claimed 300 lives in Northern Ireland last year.

The popular sports star has joined together with Q Radio presenter, Stephen Clements and motorcycle road racer, Alastair Seeley to encourage people to sign up for the Darkness Into Light Walk, which is taking place tomorrow.

Sponsor, Electric Ireland is encouraging people to wake up at at 4.15am tomorrow and complete a Darkness into Light walk, which is taking place at nine locations around Northern Ireland.

While the walk will begin in the dark, it will finish as dawn is breaking.

Paul Stapleton, General Manager of Electric Ireland, said: "We are very proud to support Darkness Into Light which has become much more than a fundraiser; it is now a national movement which reaches every community throughout Northern Ireland. This year we’d like to encourage as many people as possible to wake up early on May 6th to help raise much needed funds to help Pieta House and local charities create a brighter future".
