A 38-year-old man is due in court tomorrow charged with the murder of a Northern Ireland-born man on a bus in London.

Archie Sheppard, who was 48 and originally from Ballyclare in Co Antrim, was found with stab wounds on a Route 189 bus in Gloucester Place in London shortly after midnight on Friday.

Police have established that Mr Sheppard, who lived in Neasden in northwest London, boarded the bus at Brent Cross with a man at around 11.15pm on Thursday, but the pair sat separately.

Around 40 minutes into the journey, police said Mr Sheppard suffered a violent and sustained attack.

His attacker is believed to have fled the bus at Gloucester Place, heading towards Marble Arch.

Mr Sheppard was later discovered by a passenger who made their way to the upper deck.

A 38-year-old man was later arrested and charged with murder and two counts of possession of an offensive weapon.

John Edward Doherty, from Clem Attlee Court in London, is due to appear at the Old Bailey.

Detective Chief Inspector Noel McHugh appealed for anyone who knew Mr Sheppard "in whatever capacity to come forward" as well as eyewitnesses on the night of the attack to help build a picture around events leading to the fatal stabbing.
