LEADING US senator Bernie Sanders, who ran a close campaign against Hillary Clinton in last year's US Democratic primaries, is to appear at a Dublin book festival in June.

The independent senator from Vermont is appearing as part of the Dalkey Book Festival on Sunday June 4.

Mr Sanders will join economist and broadcaster David McWilliams, who set up the book festival with his wife Sian Smyth, for ‘An Evening with Bernie Sanders’ at Bord Gáis Energy Theatre in Dublin city centre.

The 75-year-old, who describes himself as a democratic socialist, is the longest-serving independent in US congressional history.

He and new Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez travelled to several US states last week as part of a political roadshow aimed at building opposition to Donald Trump's presidency.

Despite running for the Democratic nomination, Mr Sanders remains an independent senator.
