RESIDENTS living in a Larne housing estate where a car was driven into a house yesterday and set on fire have been left feeling "terrorised".

Oliver McMullan, who is a Sinn Féin representative for the area, said he had been contacted by residents living the Killyglen road area following the incident.

The stolen silver Peugeot car was set alight and damage was caused to the front of the house. No-one was in the property at the time. The attack took place at around 4.45pm

It is understood to be the seventh attack in the Co Antrim town in over a week and is believed to be linked to a loyalist feud.

Police arrested a 34-year-old man last night for disorderly behaviour and assault on police. He was also arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.

This brings to three the total number of arrests in connection with the arson attack at Killyglen Road at the weekend.

Mr Mullan said residents are too afraid to speak out.

"I was contacted by one of the families, they feel terrorised and just want to live in peace. Nobody wants this, it's going back to the dark ages," said Mr McMullan.

"In what other town would you see a burning car being driven into a house in broad daylight on a Sunday afternoon. This is a busy enough area with lots of children, it's a terrible image for the town.

"I would appeal to some of the bigger organisations linked to this to step in and put an end to it. The police have been pro-active and a number of arrests have been made but it is a matter of breaking down these crime gangs."

Last Tuesday, arsonists targeted a hairdressers when a car was reversed through a metal shutter and set alight. Days earlier, a number of cars were torched.
