RORY McIlroy is to host a special charity event in Belfast later this year.

The Co Down sports star will kickstart this year's Irish Open by taking part in the charity evening at the Belfast Waterfront with proceeds going to his charitable foundation.

Actor James Nesbitt will act as MC for the event on July 4 with a special guest to be announced at a later date.

The Rory Foundation, which was established in 2013, helps children live better lives, to raise funds and offer support to children's charities. It is hosting the Irish Open at Portstewart from July 6 to 9 with a percentage of tickets sold during the tournament going directly to the organisation to be then shared among nominated charities.

Speaking ahead of the event McIlroy said: "To play golf in front of a home crowd is really special and I'm looking forward to an enjoyable evening at Belfast's Waterfront Hall.

"If last year's event in Dublin is anything to go by, it will be one of the highlights of my year."

He added: "But more importantly than that, we raised a substantial amount of money for my foundation that really benefited a number children's charities - at the end of the day, that's why we're doing this."

Barry Funston from the Rory Foundation said the event last year was a huge success and a similar event in Belfast would give fans an opportunity to "get up close and personal" with McIlroy.

Tickets, priced from £40 to £60, will be available from
