A unionist politician has called for the removal of a loyalist mural mocking the death of former deputy first minister Martin McGuinness.

The large mural appeared in Moygashel in Co Tyrone in recent days and depicts what appears to be the grim reaper flanked by two union flags.

The large mural includes the words “Moygashel - celebrate the death of the Bogside butcher”.

It also says “rot in hell Marty”.

Thousands of people, including president Michael D Higgins and former US president Bill Clinton, attended the former Sinn Féin man’s funeral in Derry this week.

Ulster Unionist councillor Walter Cuddy last night said that although he had not seen the mural he was “disappointed” it had been put up.

“I think it should be taken down,” he said.

“I think that’s not helping anybody.

“We are trying to build a place for us all and get Stormont up and running for the good of us all.”

Mr Cuddy added that unionist politicians with influence over those responsible should speak to them.

“It’s insensitive and it’s important to try and talk to the people involved, it’s not doing any good,” he said.

Mr Cuddy said that the funeral of Mr McGuinness was “difficult… for a lot of people”.

“There is no question Martin McGuinness did a lot of great work in his later life, in the first part of his life he was involved in a lot of alleged crime,” he said.

Both Sinn Féin and DUP representatives declined to comment when contacted.

SDLP councillor Denise Mullen said the mural was “offensive” and called for it to be removed.
