POLICE in Armagh said a 16-year-old had consumed so much alcohol yesterday that they were five times over the drink driving limit.

Shortly before 5pm the PSNI tweeted that officers had taken two intoxicated teenagers home who had been drinking on St Patrick's Day.

"One of them has provided a breath sample of 181. The drink driving limit is 35," the tweet read.

It is believed the teenagers were out celebrating when they were found to be heavily intoxicated.

Earlier this year The Irish News revealed that the PSNI seized the equivalent of one item of alcohol from children every hour in the north.

Drink has been confiscated from minors by police 7,500 times in the last five years.

In one alarming case a 10-year-old boy in west Belfast had 30 ciders confiscated by police.

In total the PSNI has confiscated more than 36,880 alcohol items from children and teenagers aged under 18 between 2011 and 2015.
