THE family of a Derry man missing for more than a year believe his remains may have been found.

John Concannon (71), who suffered from dementia, was last seen getting off the bus on the Lenamore Road near the Derry/Donegal border in November 2015.

On Saturday, police received a report that human remains had been discovered by a member of the public in the Lenamore Road area.

A PSNI spokesman last night said "efforts are underway to recover the remains before identification procedures can be carried out".

It is understood the remains were found close to where the elderly man would have got off the bus.

Mr Concannon's brother Leon said he believes the human remains are probably those of his brother.

"There was a checked shirt and he had been wearing a checked shirt when he went missing," Mr Concannon told The Derry Journal.

"We’re not sure, for definite."

He added: "He was found almost exactly on the border.

"He was about 800 yards up from the bus stop. They found him down in a wee stream."

"We'd like to thank everybody who helped with all the searches. It’s been such a long time.

"I’m actually delighted he’s been found and hopefully it will give the whole family a bit of closure."
