A YOUNG Co Tyrone former ladies' GAA player who died suddenly in hospital has been described as a "loving person with a heart of gold".

Triona McNabb, from Dromore, Co Tyrone, died at the South West Acute Hospital in Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh, on Monday.

It is understood Ms McNabb, who was in her thirties, had been battling an illness.

A post mortem examination into her death is to be carried out today.

A police spokesman said they had received "a report of the sudden death of a woman in South West Acute hospital" on Monday.

Ms McNabb, who worked in the Crosshill Gallery in Omagh, Co Tyrone, had close links with Dromore Ladies' GFC.

She played for the club for many years and managed Dromore's 2010 Senior Intermediate champions with her sister Maeveen.

In a statement released through Dromore Ladies' GFC, Ms McNabb's family said: "We would like to thank our friends, family and community for your prayers and support at this difficult time".

The club wrote on its Facebook page that Ms McNabb had a "heart of gold and was always at the ready to help out wherever she was needed".

"Triona you will forever be in the hearts of all Dromore Ladies," it said.

"At this very difficult time our prayers and thoughts are with all the McNabb family and Triona's extended family."

In a statement, Tyrone Ladies' GFA said it was shocked by Ms McNabb's passing.

"Triona was an outstanding unselfish person who never turned down an offer to help her club Dromore in anyway," she said.

"A former player, manager and official we as Tyrone ladies send our sympathy."

Her employer, Crosshill Gallery, said it was saddened by news of the tragedy.

"Triona you will forever be remembered by us all as a kind hearted and loving person with a heart of gold," it said.

Sinn Féin councillor Stephen McCann said the area was stunned by Ms McNabb's death.

"It is just a huge shock to the two communities of Dromore and Trillick. She comes from a highly respected family and I'm sure the community will rally around them at this very sad time," he said.

"Triona was a very popular person and very highly respected. She was held in great respect among her peers."

Requiem Mass for Ms McNabb will take place on Friday at 11am in St Davog's Church, Dromore.
