THERE was no joy for Irish nominees at this year's Oscars event in LA.

Ruth Negga, an Irish-Ethiopian actress, was among those who lost out on Oscars glory. She had been nominated in the Best Actress category for her role in the historical drama Loving, where she played Mildred Loving.

The film follows the story of the landmark 1967 Supreme Court Case that saw Mildred Loving fight against her incarceration for marrying a white man.

The Limerick-based star lost out to Emma Stone for her role in La La Land,

Speaking ahead of the ceremony, Ms Negga said she was "very touched by how many people it's inspired".

"I hope people search out this couple and find out more about them," she said.

Donegal schoolboy Art Parkinson was up for two awards at the Oscars. The 15-year-old from Inishowen starred in Kubo and the Two Strings, which was nominated in the animated feature and visual effects categories.

But the film missed out on both accolades.

Dublin-born costume designer Consolata Boyle had also secured a nomination for her work on the movie Florence Foster Jenkins, starring Meryl Streep.

But Ms Boyle, who has been working on costumes in theatre and film since the early 1980s, failed to secure the award which went to Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them.

The Irish-funded production, The Lobster, had also secured an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay.

The film stars Irish actor Colin Farrell, tells the story of a group of singletons who have to find love within 45 days otherwise they are turned into animals.

Filming for the movie took place in Ireland with scenes filmed in Dublin and around Co Kerry. But the dark comedy film faced stiff competition in this category, which was won by Manchester by the Sea.
