A 63-year-old man who died after a freak accident while withdrawing money at a cash machine has been described as someone who "saw the bright side of everything".

Grandfather Michael Diaczyszyn died in Belfast's Royal Victoria Hospital last Thursday morning following complications from surgery.

A post-mortem has been carried out, but the results are not yet known.

A day earlier he was struck by a runaway empty van at an ATM on Main Street in Larne and suffered a broken leg.

The father-of-three, who volunteered in the community, has been described as a "fun-loving big man" with a "good soul" by his partner's daughter-in-law.

Chantal Ferguson told The Irish News that the whole of Larne and Glenarm has been touched by the tragedy.

"He was a fantastic big man, he was funny, he was a real handyman, very kind and caring and just saw the light side of everything, always joking and laughing," she said.

Mr Diaczyszyn, originally from Stoke on Trent in England where his Ukrainian father and Italian mother lived, had moved to Glenarm four years ago where he met Chantal's mother-in-law Mandi Ferguson.

"She's absolutely devastated, Michael was her rock," Chantal said.

"She is currently receiving treatment for breast cancer and the tragic thing is he had planned so much for my mother-in-law when she got through her chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

"As a family all the things they had planned to do, we're going to do those things with her. It's just so unfortunate what has happened. When he came into Larne that morning he wasn't expecting not to return home."

The funeral for Mr Diaczyszyn will be held at 1pm on Wednesday in St Patrick's Church of Ireland in Glenarm.

He is survived by partner Mandi Ferguson, children Lee, Lucy and Louise and grandchildren.

Police have appealed for anyone who saw the incident shortly before 8.25am on Wednesday to get in touch.
