SCHOOL leaders in Northern Ireland are to be consulted on potential industrial action amid "unprecedented and intolerable" work pressures.

The National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT) is expected to begin consulting members from next week.

The industrial action is unlikely to take the form of a strike.

Instead any action is likely to target the school inspection process by the Education and Training Inspectorate (ETI).

In a statement last night, NAHT president Paul McClenaghan said: "Head teachers across Northern Ireland are committed to providing high quality education to all pupils, and will only consider action and in particular industrial action as a last resort.

"The failure of the employers to find a solution to the long running dispute with the other teaching unions, coupled with the recent unreasonable actions of the ETI have resulted in pressure on school leaders that is unprecedented and intolerable, and we call on the government to act.

"Despite our representations to the Education Minister, the Education Department and employers, the support required to address the situation has not been provided.

"NAHT has therefore resolved to take all necessary and appropriate action to resolve the situation."

The NAHT, which represents principals and vice-principals in around two-thirds of 1,150 schools, has not taken industrial action since 2011.

Two of the largest unions in Northern Ireland - the INTO and NASUWT - have already taken strike action this year and are threatening even more walk-outs over pay.

The Ulster Teachers' Union has also advised members to stop teaching if inspectors come into their classroom.

Mr McClenaghan added: "All NAHT members will be consulted on what action to take, up to and including industrial action if necessary.

"NAHT do not consider the prospect of industrial action lightly, as in everything we do care and respect for pupils must be at the forefront of our approach."
