A PRAYER service will be held in Co Armagh tonight in memory of an 11-year-old boy who died days after collapsing from a suspected heart attack in school.

John Joe Toner from Clady passed away in hospital on Tuesday night.

The little boy was described as someone who "brought a smile to everyone who met him" as the community came together at St Malachy's Church, Ballymoyer to remember him and support his family.

Earlier this week, his parents Maria and Cormac had appealed for prayers for their son, who was believed to suffer from a heart condition since birth.

Vigils were also held in the communities of Clady, Ballymoyer and Whitecross over the weekend. But John Joe, a pupil at St Malachy's Primary School, Ballymoyer, lost his battle for life at the Royal Victoria Hospital.

Parish priest Fr Malachy Murphy said it was "devastating news".

"John Joe served here in the church," he said.

"It's a tragic loss for family, parish and everybody [who knew him]. He will be sadly missed. Such a young life."

School principal Justin Toner described his shock at the death of "our precious little John Joe".

"A special boy who made an immeasurable contribution to school and parish life," he told online blog Armagh I.

"He was a talented footballer, a choir member, and a dedicated altar server. He brought a smile to everyone who met him.

"His passing will leave a huge void in the lives of all who knew him."

SDLP councillor Sharon Haughey said: "The close knit communities of Clady, Ballymoyer and Whitecross have heavy hearts this morning as little John Joe Toner lost his battle for life.

"Our hearts are broke for John Joe's family and our prayers are now with his parents Cormac and Maria Toner, his brothers Michael and Daniel and entire family circle.

"Little John Joe was too young to die but God must have had another plan for him, he will always be in this community's heart. May he rest in peace."

John Joe's funeral is due to be celebrated at 11am on Friday in St Michael's Church, Clady, with burial in the adjoining cemetery.
