A CO Down GAA club is celebrating after one of its members was crowned an All-Ireland champion at the annual Scór cultural competition.

Niamh McDowell, from Glasdrumman GAC, won the solo singing section of the Scór na nÓg at the All-Ireland finals, held in the Waterfront Hall in Belfast on Saturday.

Niamh, a year 9 pupil at St Louis Grammar School in Kilkeel, won the title for her rendition of 'John Condon', about a young boy from Waterford who died aged 14 while fighting in the First World War.

Gary McGreevy, the chairman of Glasdrumman GAC, told The Irish News: "The party went on until the early hours. Everybody is just delighted.

"Niamh has got such an amazing voice and is one of those who could play two or three instruments at once. She has a great future and is a very grounded girl."

Mr McGreevy joked that the trophy will "now go from one side of the Mournes to the other" after the success of Gavin Gribben, who won the same title last year for Mayobridge GAC.

Members of Mayobridge GAC were finalists in the Ballad Group section of the competition.
