A SINN Féin election worker is understood to have broken both his legs after falling from a ladder while putting up posters in west Belfast.

Jim McCrea fell last week and is currently recovering in the Royal Victoria Hospital.

Sinn Féin's Pat Sheehan said the accident happened on the Springfield Road.

He had been putting up election posters in support of Mr Sheehan and the party's three other candidates in west Belfast - Fra McCann, Alex Maskey and Órlaithí Flynn.

In a social media post, Mr McCrea thanked people who had sent good wishes and called to visit both himself and his family.

West Belfast MP Paul Maskey wished the election worker a speedy recovery, while Sinn Féin councillor Stephen Magennis wrote on Facebook: "You would do anything to get out of canvassing. Get well soon mate."
