A LOVE story filmed in Co Kerry, a Dublin-born costume designer and a Limerick actress are among this year's Irish hopefuls at the Oscars.

Among those who received a nod was actress Ruth Negga, who grew up in Limerick, who was nominated in the Best Actress category for her role in Loving, in which she stars as one half of an inter-racial couple who break the law by getting married in 1960s Virginia.

The 34-year-old Irish-Ethiopian actress stars alongside Joel Edgerton in the movie, which is an adaptation of a true story.

Negga has been nominated alongside Meryl Streep, Isabelle Huppert, Natalie Portman and Emma Stone in the Best Actress category.

Dublin-born costume designer, Consolata Boyle has also been nominated in the Best Costume Design category.

Having been previously nominated for costume design on The Queen, she is recognised for her work on Florence Foster Jenkins, which stars Hollywood legend, Meryl Streep.

Irish-funded film, The Lobster, which stars Colin Farrell, also secured a nomination for Best Original Screenplay.

Filmed in Co Kerry, the movie, which also stars John C. Reilly and Rachel Weisz, is a love story set in the near future where single people, according to the rules of The City, are arrested and transferred to The Hotel.

There, they are obliged to find a matching mate in 45 days otherwise they are transformed into an animal of their choosing and released into The Woods.

Ed Guiney, Element Pictures’ producer, said: "We are so pleased that Yorgos and Efthimis’ amazing and hugely original script has been recognised by the academy. It's an incredible achievement."
