PLANS for a new 130km bicycle network in Belfast have been announced.

A public consultation on a draft Belfast Bicycle Network was launched yesterday by Infrastructure Minister Chris Hazzard.

The proposals outline the potential for around 130 kilometres of convenient, continuous and coherent bicycle routes for the city.

The plans, if implemented, would mean that two thirds of all Belfast City Council residents would be within 400 metres of a quality bicycle route.

Launching the consultation Mr Hazzard said he wanted to see cycling developed in the city.

"I want to see that enthusiasm for cycling developed further throughout the city so that everyone will have the freedom and confidence to use the bicycle for everyday journeys," he said.

Gordon Clarke, director of cycling activist charity Sustrans, Ireland said the plans for the network were an "important first step".
