TWO families have been forced from their homes in Poleglass after a woman was targeted in her home by number of men armed with batons.

Police were called to escort people, including small children, from one house in the Laurelbank area after a crowd gathered outside a property shortly after 7pm on Wednesday.

A second family also fled the area amid concerns for their safety.

Windows were smashed and two cars also damaged during the disturbance.

Large crowds of young people gathered in the area during the incident and there were reports of cars being damaged with bottles thrown at passing motorists.

The trouble has been linked to a fight between a number of people outside a west Belfast primary school last week.

Police are investigating an incident where a man armed with a hurl was filmed involved in an altercation outside St Kieran's Primary School on the Bell Steel Road, while terrified children watched on.

Police said a number of men armed with batons smashed the windows of a house on Wednesday and two cars parked outside were also damaged.

"The males forced entry to the house and assaulted a female occupant. She did not sustain serious injuries as a result. The males are believed to have made off on foot", a PSNI spokesperson said.

Police carrying out inquiries in the area arrested a 28-year-old man on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon after a fight broke out between two men. He was interviewed and released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Sinn Féin councillor Stephen Magennis said that tensions in the area had been high "after incidents in Laurelbank around a family the community had issues with".

"I have been on to the Housing Executive and agencies over the last few days to resolve this", said Mr Magennis as he appealed for calm.
