A MAN is critically ill in hospital after he was found unconscious outside a loyalist bar in west Belfast early on Friday.

A passer-by found the man in the street beside the Rex Bar on the Shankill Road at around 1.10am.

He was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital for treatment.

Police appealed to anyone who was in the area to contact officers.

In 2000 around 300 people attacked the bar as a turf war between rival loyalist groups erupted into violence. During the confrontation, shots were fired injuring seven people.
