EVEN the statues in Derry are gearing up for the city’s bid to set a new world record for the greatest number of people wearing Christmas jumpers gathered in one place.

Organisers hope to shatter the existing record of 3,743 set by the city of Kansas in the US and one of Derry's most famous statues has donned seasonal tops to set the mood.

Hands Across the Divide by artist Maurice Harron – known locally as the “Derry tappers” – was decked out in Christmas jumpers at Craigavon Bridge to greet people visiting the city.

Organisers also hope to raise money for a number of charities including Children in Crossfire, the Foyle Hospice and Concern. Money will also go towards Muscular Dystrophy UK #Team#Evan in poignant memory of Evan McGrotty (8) who drowned with his dad, Sean (49), brother, Mark (12), grandmother, grandmother, Ruth Daniels (57) and aunt, Jodie-Lee (14) in the Buncrana pier tragedy.

Evan’s mum Louise has given her full backing to the attempt which takes place tomorrow.

A spokeswoman for the organisers urged all those taking party to register online today on www.foylehospice.com or at 35 Shipquay Street. Counting for the record breaking bid gets underway from 1pm tomorrow.

“Support has already been phenomenal but we need everyone to get behind the bid,” she said.
