A WORKMAN who died after falling from a roof at the weekend in Co Down was a former republican prisoner.

Tommy Jack, from Springhill Avenue in west Belfast, died following the accident at premises where he was working in Carryduff on the outskirts of south Belfast.

The 59-year-old was originally from Scotland but had been living in west Belfast following his release from prison in England for offences linked to republican activity.

A spokesperson for the Health and Safety Executive said they are investigating the circumstances of Saturday’s incident adding: “Our sympathies and thoughts are with the bereaved family at this sad time.”

Requiem Mass for the father-of-five will take place on Thursday at noon from Corpus Christi Church followed by committal to Roselawn Crematorium.

Sinn Féin councillor Steven Corr described a “sense of shock and sadness” in the area following news of Mr Jack’s death.

He told the Irish News: “People here are still coming to terms with the loss of a great man, a great friend, and a wonderful father.

“Tommy was a well-respected member of the community, who will be sadly missed by many. This is a terrible tragedy for a family to bear, particularly in the run-up to Christmas. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to his loved ones.”
