Three charged after car chase in west Belfast

THREE arrested following a police pursuit of a suspected stolen car in Belfast have now been charged.

The chase happened just after 11am on Friday, when the car failed to stop for police and drove through a red light in the Agnes Street area of the city.

The car, a dark blue BMW, then collided with another car before hitting a wall and coming to a standstill on Northumberland Street, just of the Shankill Road.

The front of the vehicle was severely damaged in the collision.

The driver of the other car was taken to hospital and three men were arrested at the scene.

A 40 year old man has been charged with seven offences including aggravated vehicle taking, going equipped for theft, handling stolen goods and dangerous driving.

A 26 year old man has been charged with five offences including aggravated vehicle taking, going equipped for theft, handling stolen goods and possession of a class C controlled drug.

Both men are due to appear at Belfast magistrates Court on Saturday.

A 32 year old man has also been charged with five offences including aggravated vehicle taking, going equipped for theft, handling stolen goods and possessing an offensive weapon in a public place. He is due to appear at Belfast Magistrates Court on the morning of Friday 30 December.

As is normal procedure, all charges are reviewed by the PPS. 

Forensic officers were observed collecting evidence around the vehicle following the incident.

There was a strong police presence in the area near the Shankill Leisure Centre for several hours following the incident.

Detective Inspector Mark Haffie said an investigation was underway and appealed for anyone who witnessed the incident to contact police.
