FIRE crews came under attack from youths throwing fireworks as call-outs on Halloween night soared.

Fire-fighters were targeted by young people in Coalisland and also had to withdraw from incidents in Newry and Rostrevor after facing hostile crowds.

The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) said it was the busiest Halloween in six years with a 47 per cent rise in the number of calls compared with last year.

It received 232 calls and attended 166 incidents, with most started deliberately. Many involved bonfire materials including tyres.

There were no reports of any injuries.

An NIFRS spokeswoman said: "This equates to an increase of 47 per cent on incidents attended during Halloween 2015 and represents the busiest Halloween period since 2010 in terms of both calls received and mobilised incidents".

The majority of incidents - 45 per cent - were located in the Southern Area Command, which covers counties Down and Armagh, with most of these involving grassland and bonfire materials.

It received calls to 36 incidents involving bonfires and had to take action on 16 occasions.

NIFRS said 93 per cent of all fires attended over the 24-hour period were started deliberately.

Police said there were no figures available yet for any arrests related to Halloween night trouble.
