A WEST Belfast Sinn Féin councillor has said allegations made against him on social media will not prevent him from doing his job.

The allegations were made on a leaflet, distributed over the weekend, claiming Poleglass councillor Stephen Magennis had been passing information to the PSNI about local republicans.

The statement, not signed by any group, was printed onto A4 sheets and thrown from a passing car in the Colin area, a copy was also posted on a Facebook page that was later deleted.

It accused the popular councillor of "collaborating" with the PSNI and said he was "privy to operational matters" connected to PSNI search operations in the area.

Last year Mr Magennis was subject to a death threat which Sinn Féin at the time said was linked to a security alert in the Twinbrook area during which ammunition and suspected bomb making equipment was recovered.

Responding to the latest allegations Mr Magennis said, "I don't need to justify myself to anybody but this normally happens when we do something good in the area or something bad happens in the area and people put in a mix to deflect the blame or an opportunity to attack me or my party.

"These are faceless people and cowards behind this and not one bit of substance to the accusations", he said.

"This post had one intention to put myself and my family under threat and in danger and they have a lot to answer for and this will not be forgot about", he added.

The statement also claimed that Sinn Féin members had sought to distance themselves from Mr Magennis, however a number of colleagues have since issued statements via social media backing the councillor.

Among them, councillor Charlene O'Hara who said it was "absolutely disgusting to see the comments made by faceless individuals" about Mr Magennis.
