A father-of one killed in a Fermanagh road crash at the weekend died on his 25th birthday.

Kristaps Smilskalns, originally from Latvia, but living in Co Cavan, was involved in a two vehicle collision on the Derrygonnelly Road outside Enniskillen on Saturday afternoon.

He had set off with a friend from his home in Swanlinbar on a fishing trip to celebrate his birthday when tragedy struck.

Three other people remain in hospital receiving treatment for injuries sustained in the crash.

Mr Smilskalns had been living in Ireland for five and half years and moved over with his mother, brother and sister. He worked at Swanlinbar Mushrooms in the village.

Francis O'Reilly, who was the deceased's landlord, told the Irish News he was a popular member of the community.

"He was very friendly, he spoke to everybody and was a person that everybody knew," he said.

"He had very good English and was the interpreter for his friends from Lithuania and Latvia, who live in the area. He was also very much involved in the community and you would regularly see him playing pool in the pub.

"He was always smiling and died on what was his 25th birthday, which is the saddest thing of all," he added.

Requiem Mass took place yesterday at St Mary's Church, Swanlinbar and was followed by cremation at Lakeland's crematorium in Cavan. Mr Smilskalns is survived by his mother Ilze, daughter Nensita and siblings Sintija and Lucas.

Police have appealed for witnesses to the collision, which involved a silver Seat Leon and silver Vauxhall Astra and occurred at approximately 2pm on Saturday, October 15.
