A PROMINENT Irish author living in America has said Michelle Obama could make a bid to become US president within the next 10 years.

Niall O'Dowd, founder of Irish Central, said the First Lady gave the best speech of the 2016 presidential campaign and has a clear future in politics.

Writing for the website, he speculated that there could be an opening for Mrs Obama to run for president in 2024.

"Michelle Obama can distil to the very essence the most important part of the argument. If Hillary orated like that she'd be 20 points ahead," he said.

"All of which leads to the inevitable question: Does Michelle Obama have a political future? I think the answer is a resounding yes.

"Forget the protestations that Michelle and Barack Obama can't wait to leave the White House. They may well be as ambitious as Hillary Clinton and Bill were."

He speculated that there could be an opening for Mrs Obama to take a US senate seat in Chicago in 2020.

"She will be 56 and have a world of political experience behind her and would be a shoo-in," he said.

"Does this sound familiar? Oh and the Clinton two-term presidency would be up in 2024.

"How ironic it would be after having an African American president followed by a woman we were suddenly looking at an African American woman president. Now that would be historic."

Americans go to the polls on November 8 to decide whether Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump should be president.
