TWO Belfast restaurants have retained their Michelin star status, while a Co Armagh eaterie is the latest to join the elite of the Northern Ireland food scene.

Michael Deane's EIPIC on Howard Street and OX on Oxford Street, the brainchild of chef Stephen Toman and Alain Kerloc'h, made the coveted list for the Michelin Guide once again this year.

Wine & Brine in Moira also put its name on the culinary map after it was named as one of six restaurants in Northern Ireland to be awarded a prestigious 'Bib Gourmand', which recognises establishments offering "good food at affordable prices".

The winners were announced during the first-ever live launch of the Michelin Guide Great Britain and Ireland, considered the foremost authority on the world's greatest dining establishments.

Dublin restaurant Heron and Grey in Blackrock was awarded its first Michelin star, increasing to 10 the overall number of star restaurants in the Republic.

This year's edition of the guide also marks the 20th anniversary of the Bib Gourmand, with 140 'Bibs' awarded yesterday.

Five restaurants in Northern Ireland retained their bib gourmand status for 2017 - James Street South, Deanes at Queen's and Home, all in Belfast as well as Fontana in Holywood and the Old Schoolhouse Inn in Lisbane, Co Down.

Rebecca Burr, editor of the Michelin Guide, said this year's edition highlighted "the rich diversity and variety" of Ireland's restaurant scene.

"Every year we actively seek out new candidates whilst reassessing restaurants already in the guide. Consistency is key," she said.

Colin Neill of Hospitality Ulster said: "We congratulate Eipic and OX on the news that they have retained their Michelin stars.

"Maintaining such a high standard in such a competitive industry is a difficult thing to do and they must be applauded for their hard work and dedication.

"It is also fantastic to see that six restaurants here have also been awarded the prestigious Bib Gourmand accolade."
