THE five-year-old boxing fan whose letter consoling Michael Conlan went viral during the Rio Olympics has been presented with his own prize by the Belfast fighter.

Finn McManus from Swords, Co Dublin was handed custom-made boxing gloves during RTÉ's The Late Late Show on Friday night.

Last month Finn asked his older sister Meadhbh to write to the 24-year-old from west Belfast on his behalf after the bantamweight boxer controversially lost a Olympic quarter-final bout against Russian Vladimir Nikitin.

He offered the "the best boxer in the world" not only words of comfort but also his school medal.

The message was sent to Conlan via Facebook and then shared widely when it was posted on Twitter by Finn's uncle.

Conlan responded by describing it as a "very warming message" before promising a gift for his young fan.

On Friday, the 2012 Olympic bronze medallist and reigning world champion came good on his promise and gave Finn boxing gloves bearing both their names.

During his appearance, the Belfast fighter also confirmed to Late Late Show host Ryan Tubridy that he is currently negotiating with promoters ahead of a move into professional boxing.
