A TOURIST in Fermanagh was seriously injured by a cow over the bank holiday weekend, in an incident which claimed the life of the family dog.

The accident happened at Devenish Island, a sixth century monastic site on Lower Lough Erne.

The injured woman was airlifted to hospital on Sunday and is currently being treated at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast. Her injuries while serious are not thought to be life-threatening.

It is understood the woman was injured while coming to the aid of her pet that being attacked by the cow.

The dog was treated by vets following the attack, but according to local reports, has since died.

The tourist had travelled to the island on a private cruiser with her son, who was unhurt.

The Enniskillen RNLI crew were performing training exercises at the time and were tasked by Belfast Coastguard to assist.

The RNLI boat helped transport paramedics from the mainland and the Irish Coast Guard helicopter airlifted the woman to the nearby South West Acute Hospital in Enniskillen before she was transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital.
