INVESTIGATIONS have been launched after a 30-year-old man died in custody at Maghaberry Prison.

The PSNI, coroner and Prisoner Ombudsman are to examine the circumstances of the death, which is not thought to be being treated as suspicious.

Prison Service director general Sue McAllister said: “I extend my sympathy and that of the Northern Ireland Prison Service to the family of the prisoner who has died.

"This is a tragedy and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time."

She added the “while investigations are ongoing it would be inappropriate to provide any further comment”.

In a recent annual report Prisoner Ombudsman Tom McGonigle revealed that two prisoners had died while being held in Maghaberry during 2015-2016.

One appeared to be self-inflicted while the other was due to natural causes.
