A CO Antrim GAA club at the centre of a missing cash scandal has now received around £70,000 back.

Earlier this year Ruairí Óg CLG in Cushendall launched an investigation after claims that in excess of £100,000 had gone missing from club coffers.

The Irish News understands that officials have now established that in fact up to £170,000 may have disappeared, with sources suggesting the final figure could be closer £200,000.

However, it is understood that to date £70,000 has been paid back.

The missing cash revelations sent shockwaves through the high-profile Glens of Antrim club when details were made public in April.

The club launched an investigation and asked an accountant to examine its finances as the full extent of its losses emerged.

It is understood the investigation was centred on the activity of an individual connected to the club.

At the time well-placed sources said the majority of members had a sympathetic attitude to the person.

One of the best known hurling clubs in Ulster, Cushendall were defeated by Limerick side Na Piarsaigh in All-Ireland club final on St Patrick's Day.

In the run-up to the game it received high-profile support from Hollywood star Liam Neeson.

Chairman Brian Kearney later said that donations received to support the club's All-Ireland campaign were accounted for.

Earlier this year the Antrim County Board said it wanted to meet the club after the issue was discussed at a management committee meeting.

Antrim County Board chairman Collie Donnelly last night confirmed that a meeting took place.

“We met with the club and were satisfied the proper procedures are in place going forward,” he said.

“We are conscious that it is a delicate situation.”

No-one from the club was available for comment last night.

When details of the missing cash emerged the PSNI said it had not received any reports.
