A CHARITY event will be held to mark the first anniversary of the tragic deaths of three friends killed in a road crash in Co Down.

A year on from the deaths of Peter Hughes (19) from Dromintee, Conall Havern (20) from Newry and Gavin Sloan (20) from Kilkeel, family and friends will come together to remember the university pals.

The three young men, all students at Queen's University, were killed in a two-car collision on the A1 dual carriageway between Dromore and Banbridge on August 23 2015.

They had been returning home from Belfast after finalising their accommodation for the forthcoming academic year.

A charity poker event is due to be held in the same week as the first anniversary of their deaths, with organisers saying the fundraiser is a fitting tribute as two of the men were keen players.

The fundraiser on August 27 will take place at Dromintee GAC - where Mr Hughes was an keen member - with proceeds to go to Newry-based Head Injury Support, a group which helps people who have suffered head injuries in the local community.

Dromintee GAC have already been honouring the contribution of Mr Hughes' with an inscription dedicated to him on their jerseys.

'PH6' - Mr Hughes' initials and the jersey number he wore - are underneath the crest of the jersey currently being worn by the senior team.

A memorial match was also held earlier this year featuring a south Armagh select team which faced a side from south Down - with the players made up of family and friends of the three students.
