MAJOR maintenance work costing £1.5m is expected to cause delays on the M3 Lagan Bridge in Belfast over eight weekends up until the end of October.

The work is due to begin on Friday and all four main carriageways of the motorway will be affected at different stages over the next two months.

The project will see the replacement of bridge expansion joints and resurfacing taking place.

The disruption will affect the M3's junction with the Westlink and the M2 at York Street to the junction with the A2 at Sydenham Bypass.

Diversion routes will be in operation and in order to minimise delays, the closures will be restricted to one main carriageway at a time, and will only take place between 11pm on Fridays and 6am on Mondays.

A TransportNI spokesperson said: "This work is essential for maintenance purposes and will have long term benefits from the new bridge joints and road surface along this stretch.

"TransportNI has made every effort to programme the necessary works operations and traffic management arrangements to minimise inconvenience to the public. Motorists however, should be aware that some delays can be expected and they should allow additional time when planning journeys."

Transport NI said that the completion dates for the work are subject to "favourable weather conditions."

Further information and diversion routes are available online on the Department of Infrastructure website.
