Human trafficking charges against Romanian withdrawn

A 29-year-old Romanian man who appeared at Derry Magistrate's Court on human trafficking charges on Tuesday has had all his charges withdrawn.

Florin Gheorghe, whose address was given as Meadowbank Court in Derry, was charged with five offences including false imprisonment, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, rape, trafficking into the UK for sexual exploitation and causing or inciting prostitution.

All the charges were said to relate to dates between June 19 and July 24 this year and the defendant had been remanded in custody.

However, a prosecuting solicitor told the court there had been "a material change in the available evidence" and as such it no longer supported the charges.

He applied for all the charges to be withdrawn.

The judge ordered the charges to be withdrawn and said Gheorghe should be released.
