ONE Direction star Niall Horan hit the golf course for a pro-am event ahead of the Northern Ireland Open tournament in Ballymena.

The festival of golf and food at Galgorm Castle runs until Monday.

Now in its fourth year, the NI Open, part of the European Challenge Tour schedule, is expected to attract in excess of 40,000 spectators.

Some 156 professionals will tee up today (THU) in the hope of getting their hands on the NI Open trophy this weekend.

Following the completion of play at around 5pm on Sunday the winner will be crowned on the 18th green.

At yesterday's pro-am event Niall Horan was joined on the fairway by Northern Ireland goalkeeping legend Pat Jennings, former Ireland and Ulster rugby player Stephen Ferris and 13-year-old golfing prodigy Tom McKibbin from Co Antrim, among others.

It was announced earlier this week that Portstewart will host the Irish Open golf tournament in 2017.
