A PIPE bomb, left on top of a car in Co Antrim, was viable according to police.

The device, on Main Street in the village of Crumlin, was made safe by British army bomb experts on Saturday.

It sparked a security alert for several hours in the village resulting in shops closing and homes being evacuated.

Sinn Féin MLA Declan Kearney said those behind the incident should be condemned.

"The disruption brought about by this security alert is indefensible," he said.

“Saturday is one of the busiest days in Crumlin; many businesses and shoppers have been affected as a result of the disruption caused.

"There is no room for these type of attacks in our society and they must end immediately."

PSNI superintendent John Magill asked for help finding the perpetrators

"A viable device has been made safe and has been taken away for forensic examination," he said.

"I would appeal to anyone who may have noticed anyone acting suspiciously in the Main Street area of Crumlin or who may have information about this incident to contact Antrim police on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference number 546 23/07/16.

"Alternatively, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
