A rural parish in the Glens of Antrim will celebrate its connection with Roger Casement with a special event on Saturday June 25.

‘The Rogers Casement’, a symposium to be held in the parish of Culfeightrin, Carey, will take a unique look at the story of Roger David Casement through talks, exhibitions, music and theatre.

According to Fionntán McCarry, secretary of the Carey Historical Society, the event’s title is a play on words, referring to the multiple identities of Roger David Casement - the Protestant secretly baptised a Catholic; the imperialist turned anti-imperialist; the British Consul turned Irish Republican; the Easter Rising hero who left Germany in an attempt to have it postponed.

The event will be held at Carey Parish Hall, Ballyvoy, near Ballycastle, while an exhibition of local historical memorabilia will also be on display. Doors open at 12pm and the event closes at 7pm.

Speakers include Patrick Casement, unionist politician and historian Jeffrey Dudgeon and authors Professor Jordan Goodman and Dr Angus Mitchell.
