AN opinion poll conducted across the north earlier this month shows increased support for a Brexit – although most voters who have already made up their mind will choose to remain in the EU.

The survey by market research firm Millward Brown showed 48 per cent of people in Northern Ireland support retaining ties with Brussels.

Almost one third – 32 per cent – want to leave, while 20 per cent are undecided.

A similar poll carried out by Millward Brown in May showed 55 per cent of people were in favour of Remain compared to 23 per cent for Leave.

The research for the poll published yesterday was carried out in the two weeks to June 13.

Millward Brown said 1,000 people were surveyed, 688 of who said they intended to vote.

The research company said its data showed support for a Leave vote had increased across all age groups since its last poll in May but especially among 35-49 year olds.

The poll also suggests that Catholics continue to be substantially more likely to vote to remain within the EU, and are three times more likely to want to stay rather than leave. Opinion amongst Protestants was evenly split in April Milward Brown's May poll but they are now more likely to support a Brexit.
