NOT a single motorist has been fined for breaching Belfast city centre's new 20 mph speed limit, according to the PSNI.

Introduced at the beginning of February this year, the speed restriction covers 76 roads and streets close to the city centre, including Donegall Square, Dunbar Link and Cathedral Quarter.

It was introduced by the Department for Regional Development in an effort to reduce car accidents and improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians.

However according to the police, who are responsible for enforcing the speed limit, not a single motorist has been issued with a fixed penalty for exceeding the 20 mph limit.

Critics of the restriction claimed it would lead to increased fines.

Chief inspector Diane Pennington said: "Police are pleased to see that motorists are heeding the new 20mph speed restrictions in Belfast city centre and to date there have been no fixed penalty notices issued for excessive speed in this zone.

"Responsible driving makes for a safer environment for everyone working, socialising, shopping and travelling through the city and it also has a positive impact upon traffic progression."

Ms Pennington thanked drivers for adhering to the restriction.

Official research in England has shown that a person hit by a car travelling at 30mph faces a one-in-five chance of being killed, whereas when the speed is reduced to 20mph, their chances of being killed are reduced to one-in-40.
