TRIBUTES have been paid to one of north Antrim's "last true characters" who died in a road crash close to the home of the late motorbike legend Joey Dunlop.

The victim was named locally as Olaf McCaw (63) from Dervock.

He died following a two-vehicle collision shortly before 7.30am on Monday at the junction of the Garryduff and Lislagan Roads near Ballymoney.

Police have appealed for witnesses.

Mr McCaw was an uncle of the wife of Ballymoney Ulster Unionist councillor Darryl Wilson.

He said he knew him very well.

"He was one of the last true characters. Everybody knew him and everybody liked him and he always had a laugh and a yarn with everyone, a well-respected man," he said.

"I think he worked as a mechanic in his younger days. He also played the guitar and would have sung a bit.

"He will be a big loss to the village of Dervock and Ballymoney."

Mr Wilson said Mr McCaw is survived by his partner Margaret and his sons Daniel and William.

The circumstances of the collision are under investigation but the councillor added that he had been in contact with road officials about grass on the verge at the junction.

"It is a bad junction. The grass was high there. I contacted Roads Service six days ago specifically about that junction and I got back a thing about budgetary constraints," he said.
