A 37-YEAR-OLD man and his two children, who were hurt by lightning in Lisburn on Tuesday, are among the latest people to have been injured by freak storms.

Lightning strikes on mainland Europe late last month killed one man and injured at least 14 people.

The man was killed after he was hit while on a mountain in southern Poland.

In Paris, 11 people, including eight children, were struck while they were sheltering under a tree at a birthday party in Parc Monceau on May 28. Some of the children were seriously hurt.

Three men, all in their forties, were also seriously hurt at a youth football match in Germany.

The referee at the match in Hoppstaedten in the south-west of Germany took a direct lightning hit.

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service urged the public to be cautious on Tuesday night, with further storms forecast.

"If there is a high chance of thunder storms, lightning safety advice would suggest that you stay indoors," the service said.

"But if you are outside you should avoid open fields and hilltops. You should also stay away from tall, isolated tress.

"If you are in a group, spread out to avoid the current travelling between group members. You should also stay away from water and wet items as well as metal objects which are all excellent conductors of electricity."
