THE PSNI says there is no indication of any paramilitary involvement in an attack in Co Tyrone where a man was shot in both legs.

Two men wearing balaclavas and camouflage jackets, one armed with a handgun, went into a house in Cookstown and threatened people before shooting the man.

The 35-year-old, named locally as David McElhone, remained in a stable condition in hospital on Monday following the attack at around 5.40pm on Sunday.

It is believed the shooting happened following a house party.

A woman and another man, both aged in their thirties, were also in the house at the time, but were not injured in the attack.

PSNI Detective Inspector Will Tate said: "Incredibly this incident occurred in a busy residential area during daylight hours.

"We believe those responsible may well have been spotted by local people both as they approached the property and as they made their escape from the area on foot.

"We are keen to hear from witnesses or anyone with any other information about this crime."

A PSNI spokeswoman later added: "There is no indication of any paramilitary involvement."

Sinn Féin's John McNamee condemned the attack, saying it was one of a number of shootings that had happened in Cookstown in recent months.

"It's a worrying statistic and the fear is that if this continues then someone will lose their life," the Mid Ulster councillor said.

SDLP councillor Tony Quinn, who lives nearby, described the shooting as a "worrying" incident for residents.

"Obviously for the victim it's a very traumatic experience for him, but I know it has left a mark with the whole community," he said.

Anyone with information about the shooting can contact police on the non-emergency number 101.
