A SAFETY group overseeing the Casement Park project has agreed its terms of reference on how it should operate nearly five months behind schedule.

The Safety Technical Group (STG) advises on safety issues for the GAA stadium design and includes representatives from the emergency services and Sport NI.

In August a British Cabinet Office-led report examined the £77 million redevelopment plans and made several recommendations in a bid to get the troubled project back on track.

Among its recommendations the review said new STG terms of reference should be agreed within two months of appointing a new STG chair.

The new chairperson was appointed in October, but The Irish News revealed last month that the terms had still not been agreed.

For years the Casement Park redevelopment project has been plagued with problems and delays.

A fresh planning bid is expected this autumn, nearly two years after approval was overturned after a High Court judge ruled it was unlawful.

Speaking on Tuesday at a consultation event in west Belfast on the stadium plans, project sponsor Stephen McGeehan confirmed that the terms have now been agreed.

"The terms of reference have been agreed by the committee recently in the last meeting. The members all agreed and accepted the terms and conditions," he said.

Mr McGeehan said the areas of disagreement had been "issues around legal advice" and "management of information".

"It's important that everybody has confidence in the group, and the nature of the STG process is that everyone needs to be operating within a safe environment," he said.

Earlier the year The Irish News revealed that lawyers had been brought in by some organisations involved in the Casement project in a dispute over FOI requests.

In December the STG discussed new terms of reference but was unable to agree on how to respond to FOIs.

In an email a Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure (Dcal) official noted that some STG members "wish for their legal representatives to engage on (the) FOI issue".
