A MAN who was murdered in Derry at the weekend was killed by a single stab wound to the throat caused by a broken glass, a court has heard.

Father-of-one Gerard Quinn (24) was attacked at Milldale Crescent on Saturday night and died later at Altnagelvin hospital from his injuries.

A 16-year-old appeared at a youth court in Derry charged with murder. He cannot be named because of his age.

The defendant was also charged with attempting to cause grievous bodily harm to Mr Quinn's twin brother, Michael.

District Judge Barney McElholm described the murder as a "tragedy for all concerned."

A detective constable told the court the PSNI received a report that a man had been stabbed in the throat at Tullymore Road around 10.30pm on Saturday.

He told the court the victim was found lying on the ground having lost a lot of blood and was being given first aid by members of the public. The victim's brother, Michael Quinn, was also injured.

The officer said that the post-mortem showed cause of death was a wound to the neck caused by broken glass. The defendant made no reply when charged.

In response to questions from defence lawyer Paul Foster the police officer agreed that the deceased and his brother were at a house party also attended by the defendant.

She agreed there was a melee involving another 16-year-old and said the youth had made the case that he acted in self-defence.

Mr Foster said the defendant's family wished to offer their condolences to the Quinn family and to thank the community for their support.

There was no application for bail and the district judge remanded the 16 year-old into custody until June 7.
