A 16-year-old boy has been charged  with the murder of Gerard Quinn in Derry.

The boy also faces further charges of attempted grievous bodily harm with intent and a further assault on another 24-year-old man, believed to be Mr Quinn's twin brother Michael.

He is due to appear before Derry Magistrates Court on Tuesday morning. Mr Quinn died in Altnagelvin Hospital after being stabbed outside a house party in nearby Curryneirin on Saturday night.

It is understood the father-of-one had gone to help his twin brother Michael who was injured during what police have described as an altercation.

He was also treated in hospital but was later released.

Police said they were called to Milldale Crescent shortly before 10.30pm where it is understood Mr Quinn had suffered an injury to his neck.

He died despite frantic efforts by neighbours and ambulance staff to save him.

His uncle Joe Quinn, who is an underage coach with Ardmore, said he was in Gweedore in west Donegal when he got the devastating news on Sunday morning.

"If I was to describe him and Michael I'd say they were loveable rogues. They were very good young fellows," he said.

"Both of them played football at underage but Gerard stuck at it; he was very popular and loved Gaelic.

"I do a bit of gardening and I had Gerard out helping me and he was a hard worker. He was very helpful and kind. Both Gerard and Michael were very popular young fellows."

He said said the entire Quinn family was still in shock over the murder and Gerard's parents were struggling to come to terms with what happened.

"Rose, his mother - she's from Tallaght in Dublin - she and Gerard don't know how to handle this at all," he said.

Mr Quinn played for St Mary's GFC in Ardmore and a minute's silence was held at Sunday's Ulster Senior Championship game between Derry and Tyrone at Celtic Park.

Police in Derry had been granted a further 24 hours to question the 16-year-old boy in relation to Mr Quinn’s murder.

A detective constable told Derry Magistrates Court on Monday that the youth was arrested shortly after midnight on Sunday.
