RACIST graffiti has been daubed on a house in Dungannon.

The words 'Muslim Scum' were sprayed on the wall of a property on the Oaks Road in the Co Tyrone town.

It is understood the incident has yet to be reported to police.

PSNI Chief Inspector Stephen Humphries said: "As yet, it appears this has not been reported to police, however, we would encourage all incidents of this nature to be reported to us as soon as possible.

"Police in Dungannon take hate crime seriously and actively investigate all incidents reported to us.

"Our message is very clear in order to prevent hate crimes occurring people need to report it to police."

The senior officer said police in the town were "working hard with various community and voluntary groups to help build confidence within minority ethnic groups to ensure that those who are the victims of crime report those crimes to police".

Patrick Yu from the Northern Ireland Council of Ethnic Minorities condemned those behind the attack on the property.

"We need to ask the victim to contact the police as they have support services to help people," he said.

"This is a crime. It is Islamophobia."

Mr Yu says the police and Stormont's Department of Justice do "quite a good job" on hate crime issues but said more must be done to tackle the "social issues and prejudice".

"There are two issues," he said. "One is crime. The other is a social issue and prejudice. It's all about social cohesion, just like racism and sectarianism.

"We have to tackle the mindset of prejudice as society is still biased against minorities."
