A MAN arrested by gardaí investigating the murder of Paul Quinn in 2007 has been released without charge.

Michael Bellew was being held at Carrickmacross Garda station as farmland belonging to his family near the border was searched by a specialist team.

However, gardaí confirmed yesterday that the man arrested on Thursday had been released without charge.

Breege Quinn told The Irish News last night that the family will "keep hoping and praying" that those responsible for her son's death are brought to justice.

She said: "We are disappointed but at the same time we know that the gardaí are working away.

"Those that are responsible deserve to be behind bars and those that didn't do it have to be set free."

Mrs Quinn added: "It was so long since anyone had been arrested and it came out of the blue to us. We'll keep hoping and praying."

No-one has ever been charged with the murder of Mr Quinn (21), who was beaten to death in a barn at Oram, Co Monaghan in October 2007.

He was found at farm buildings in Tullycoora and died in hospital several weeks later.

His murder is believed to have been carried out by members of the Provisional IRA.

In November 2013 Michael Bellew was beaten with baseball bats and shot in both legs in the kitchen of his Cullyhanna farmhouse in south Armagh by a masked gang.

He was in a wheelchair for three months after the attack and needed metal rods in his legs.

In a statement to the Irish News at the time, dissident group Óglaigh na hÉireann claimed responsibility after accused him of placing the lives of members at risk.

Mr Bellew, whose name is not thought previously to have been connected to the Quinn killing, denied the claims.
