A CHARITY in west Belfast has appealed to members of the public not to donate to bogus street collectors claiming to be from the organisation.

The Welcome Centre, in the Divis area, made the appeal via its Facebook page.

Warning about being approached the centre said: "We have had a few reports lately from the general public to say they have been approached by people on the street claiming to be collecting for the Welcome Organisation.

"Just to clarify, we never have people on the street with sponsorship forms collecting for us so these unfortunately are not legit, and are currently being investigated.

The post added: "We would ask that you call us at the centre on 028 9024 0424 option 2 to discuss any concerns you have of this nature."

A fundraising event for the charity is due to take place on Saturday, April 30 in the Roddy McCorley club on the Glen Road, with sponsorship forms being stocked in shops around the Falls area.

The centre, which provides clothes, food and showering facilities to homeless and vulnerable people, was forced to close for several hours last summer due to an anti-internment bonfire.

In January 2013, the centre's previous premises in St Peter's Square was burnt down in an arson attack.
